Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) and Pipe Bursting Applications

Flex-Ring® Joint Pipe
Pipe Bursting Applications
AMERICAN Ductile Iron Pipe is ideal for trenchless applications. The inherent qualities of ductile iron pipe make it a preferred trenchless pipe material. These qualities include: strength (pressure, external loads) that is independent of time and temperature, safety factors, toughness, ease of assembly, pipe wall impermeability, utility and user familiarity, ease and dependability of tapping, and being manufactured from recycled material. Ductile iron pipe offers versatility for various trenchless methods including pipe bursting, horizontal directional drilling (HDD), and others (slip-lining, casing/carrier, Pilot Tube, microtunneling).
Perhaps the most important benefit of using ductile iron pipe for trenchless installations is the ability to install the 20-feet sections (or shorter, as required) using the “Cartridge” assembly method for projects that have very limited or restricted access. The “Cartridge” assembly method can be best described as the assembling of individual sections of ductile iron pipe, in a secured entry and assembly pit, then progressively pulled or pushed (depending on joint being used) into the bore path for HDD or the existing deteriorated pipe for pipe bursting, a distance equivalent to a single pipe section.
