Details: Back-up ring and adjacent tubing. Actual dimensions vary with diameter, thickness and metal composition. |
For roll bodies, hydraulic cylinder bodies, shafts and similar items having circumferential welds, 1.0 joint efficiency may be obtained. Full penetration welds with AMERICAN CENTRIFUGAL's unique back-up ring construction may be developed by removal of the back-up ring which contains the root of the weld. Back-up rings produced at AMERICAN CENTRIFUGAL are similar in composition to the metal being welded, and are accurately machined to the required dimensions. For some types of rolls and rotating machinery parts, the back-up rings may be left in place and the extra boring operation eliminated. See Quality Assurance for certification of personnel and procedures in accordance with stipulated requirements.

| Photograph of a polished cross section of a fully automatic submerged arc AMERICAN weld illustrates the high level of integrity. The uniformity of mechanical properties is emphasized by the uniform response to the polishing operation. The interface of the outside of the back-up ring and the machined recess in the tube ends is faintly visible. |
The above photograph was taken at the same location after an etching process was used to bring out the finer grain size of the weld as contrasted to that of the back-up ring and the tubes. Note the penetration of the weld into the back-up ring and side walls of the base metal. |
