| Several different generic types of exterior primers and coatings for pipe and fittings are available upon request. Because of the variables and complexities involved in the selection and application of the proper coating for a given service, ACIPCO invites inquiries for technical assistance.
BITUMINOUS ASPHALTIC COATING Ductile iron and gray iron pipe and fittings with an asphaltic/bituminous coating have provided trouble-free service for decades. Unless otherwise specified, an asphaltic coating is applied to the outside of all pipe and fittings manufactured by ACIPCO.
The primary purpose of the asphaltic coating is to minimize atmospheric oxidation for aesthetic reasons. If soils are deemed to be corrosive to ductile iron pipe, polyethylene encasement should be used most of the time, in accordance with ISO 8180 and AWWA C105.
ZINC COATING ACIPCO can supply zinc-coated ISO 2531 ductile iron pipe in metric sizes in accordance with ISO 8179 and EN 545 for an additional cost. This coating is not intended to protect ductile iron pipe in severely corrosive, low-resistivity soils. If these soil conditions are encountered, please contact ACIPCO for technical assistance.
OTHER SPECIAL COATINGS ACIPCO can furnish other special exterior coating systems. Contact ACIPCO for technical assistance in the selection of special exterior coating systems.
UNCOATED PIPE Because some customer applications may require piping or fittings that have no coating applied to the exterior, ACIPCO furnishes, when specified at the time of purchase, any of its products without exterior coatings. |
This 800mm ACIPCO Ductile Iron FastiteĀ® Joint treated water transmission main was furnished and installed - as is most ductile iron pipe - with standard asphaltic coating approximately 25 microns thick on the outside. |
