The American Public Works Association has named the Hyperion Treatment Plant in Los Angeles as one of the "Top Ten Public Works Projects of the Century." The award recognizes those projects that significantly affected and improved the quality of life in the United States or Canada. Projects did not still need to be in existence or actively used to be eligible for the award.

Hyperion began a massive construction program in 1991 for full secondary treatment of wastewater and completed it in 1998. Approximately 7,000 tons of AMERICAN Ductile Iron pipe and fittings were used during construction of the full secondary treatment facilities. The far-reaching program resulted in a dramatically cleaner Santa Monica Bay. Spills at Hyperion and solids discharged from the plant into the bay were virtually eliminated. The first Hyperion plant was built in 1925 along the Pacific Coast.

Other projects recognized with Hyperion by the American Public Works Association as the century's most important include the Panama Canal, Hoover Dam, the Interstate Highway system, Golden Gate Bridge, and the St. Lawrence Seaway/Power Project.

Here are a few points to keep in mind while considering AMERICAN pipe and fittings for your next project:

  • AMERICAN's Flex-Ring® joint is ideal for 4- through 36-inch Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) applications. The pulling strength of the joint is maximized by the design of the joint, which effectively redistributes the loading around the bell while still offering generous joint deflections. Ductile iron pipe may be installed in HDD applications with or without polyethylene encasement as appropriate. See AMERICAN's Web site for allowable pulling loads for Flex-Ring®.
  • AMERICAN is able to supply C153 fittings for most of the popular configurations throughout our entire 4- through 64-inch size range. This is true for both restrained joint (Flex-Ring® & Lok-Ring®) and mechanical joint fittings. C110 fittings are no longer available in some sizes, joint types, and configurations. They are being replaced by the more efficient C153 design.
  • Reminder: AMERICAN has not furnished ductile iron pipe for digester gas service for several years. The standards for ductile iron pipe and fittings for gas service were withdrawn by ANSI in 1994 and 1996. Although we furnished some piping to those standards after they were withdrawn, we withdrew from that market several years ago.
