About Us

The American Steel Pipe Division of the American Cast Iron Pipe Company operates one of the most modern and well-equipped electric resistance weld mills in the United States. The total manufacturing facility covers in excess of 228,000 square feet under roof.

American Steel Pipe is produced in a size range of 10-3/4" through 24" diameter, in lengths up to 100 feet and in API grades B through X-80. American Steel Pipe has many applications including high pressure oil and gas transmission lines, distribution main lines, offshore gathering systems, steel pipe pilings, abrasive-resistance pipe, HIC resistant pipe for sour service, dredge pipe, and product pipelines. The pipe meets or exceeds electric weld specifications set forth by the American Petroleum Institute. American Steel Pipe holds API Certificate No. 5L-0126 for Line Pipe and is BS EN ISO 9001:2000 certified.

AMERICAN's manufacturing facility consists of two mills. One mill has a production capability of 10-3/4" through 20" O.D. with a wall thickness capability of up to .500 inches. The second mill produces steel pipe in 16" through 24" diameters and has a wall thickness capability of up to .750 inches. Length capabilities up to 100 feet for API steel line pipe and up to 120 feet for piling and other structural applications are available.

The Golden Rule

Organized in 1905, the American Cast Iron Pipe Company operates the largest individual ductile iron pressure pipe manufacturing plant in the U.S.A. Aside from being recognized as a producer of highest quality piping products, AMERICAN is unusual in that its operation is in accordance with the Eagan Plan which was named for its originator, John Joseph Eagan, AMERICAN's founder. This Plan incorporates a unique method of industrial organization including the beneficial ownership of the Company by its employees and, most importantly, the application of the Golden Rule to its activities. Except for several years during which he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. Eagan was President of AMERICAN from its founding until his death. Before his death on March 30, 1924, Mr. Eagan acquired all of the outstanding common stock of AMERICAN and deposited it in a trust established for the benefit of the employees.

Mr. Eagan was a successful industrialist who regarded industry in its social as well as its economic significance. He not only lived and practiced the precepts of Christianity in his daily life, but his deep convictions also convinced him of the practicality of applying the Golden Rule to industry.

Service was to be the cornerstone of the Company's operation: service to the consuming public by manufacturing a meritorious product; service to the employees by the application of the Golden Rule in all employee-employer relations; and service to the stockholders by making for them a fair return on their investment.

Having adopted these principles in 1922, the name American Cast Iron Pipe Company has become synonymous with service and with highest quality pressure piping; and the success of these endeavors is reflected by the confidence shown in AMERICAN today by its many customers.

Since its founding, AMERICAN has continually pioneered in research, pursuing an aggressive development program designed to improve both products and service. Higher strength metals and stronger, more economical joints embody but a few of the resulting achievements. This research program has produced many patented developments, some of which have been adopted by others in the iron pipe industry throughout the world, marking AMERICAN as a leader in its field.

America's Premier HIC Plant Is Located In Alabama. Ain't That Ironic?

We're not talking about people here. We're referring to American Steel Pipe's ERW HIC resistant steel pipe manufacturing facility. Over the years, we've developed a highly sophisticated material (patent pending) that allows us to manufacture pipe that is resistant to Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC) and Sulfide Stress Cracking (SSC). American Steel Pipe currently has pipe in service that has met both the NACE and BP test solution requirements. And we offer this pipe in a versatile line of sizes ranging from 10 3/4" through 24". So when you're transporting oil or gas containing hydrogen sulfide, specify HIC resistant steel pipe from the people with experience.
